Welcome to Buckhead

Known as an affluent, upscale neighborhood within the Atlanta city limits, beautiful Buckhead has both 'old' money and 'new' money. The area's wealth is evidenced by its continued growth, which includes the newly developed shopping areas, high-rise apartments, and trendy restaurants. Its elegant residential streets are tree-lined and full of some of the most remarkable architecture and landscapes in all of the south, including its most prized home the Swan House, located at the Atlanta History Center.

Visitors will find the trendiest of fashions and a variety of popular brands at Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza, and the Buckhead Village District. Buckhead dining ranges from casual eats to gourmet fare from Atlanta’s culinary icons and best new chefs. And as the sun sets, Buckhead’s hotel bars and rooftop lounges mix the right ingredients for a memorable night out on the town.

The 202 acres now known as Buckhead was originally deeded to Henry Irby in 1837 for $650.   Shortly after his shockingly inexpensive purchase, Irby built a tavern and grocery store near the intersection of what is now Peachtree Road and Paces Ferry. Legend has it that Irby at some point in the early years of his ownership, killed a buck and hung its head from a post for all to see, and soon enough, people started referring to this meeting place as “the buck’s head”.

Buckhead was only lightly populated for much of the 20th century. The area started out as a prime place for summer and country homes for some of Atlanta’s wealthiest. From the beginning, these estates were built on beautiful, wooded lots, far removed from the road. Over the years, as Buckhead transformed from just seasonal residences to a year-round community, the many neighborhoods were subdivided and established, and many more homes were built.
